LONDON (AFP) — The lawyer for British terror suspect Rashid Rauf said on Monday that he believed his client, who disappeared last month while in Pakistan police custody, was in fact being secretly held by authorities.

The report in The Guardian daily comes ahead of a meeting between Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Downing Street later on Monday.

Speaking to The Guardian, Rauf's lawyer Hashmat Ali Habib said: "It wasn't an escape from custody. ... You could call it a 'mysterious disappearance' if you like, but not an escape."

"The Pakistanis are  simply not interested in handing him over to the British. They never have been, although it is not clear why not."
Rauf was arrested in 2006 and is suspected in an alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners with liquid explosives. Reports of the plot led airlines to limit the amount of liquids passengers may carry on board.

Britain has been seeking the extradition of Rauf in a 2002 murder case unrelated to the alleged plane plot.

He disappeared on December 14 while being escorted by two police officers along with his uncle to a fast-food restaurant and a mosque. The two officers have since been formally charged.

"Look, many people, thousands of people, disappear in Pakistan," Habib told The Guardian.

"The government knows what it means, and the people know what it means."

He said that it was possible Rauf had not disappeared forever, though, adding: "Sometimes in Pakistan, people come home after two or three years saying they were just taken out of prison and left at the side of a main road. Or sometimes people are brought to the surface by the authorities, for some reason or other."

"Perhaps it will be announced that Rashid was caught in crossfire during a police operation. Then his family will be given his body."
